Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position as White House adviser for strategic communication. She must contend with a president that acts as his own communication director, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the strategy of communication for the administration as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversy. Schlapp has remained focused and on task, working in conjunction with White House teams in political issues as well as legislative affairs and policy along with the wider communication team. The media attention she received during March was when she was named one of the candidates to succeed Hope Hicks. Schlapp is, however, not lost sight of her mission. She is in close contact with White House political affairs and legislative teams along with policy shops as well as with the overall communications operation in order to ensure that the policies are implemented. Her focus has been on issues including security at schools, opioids, infrastructure as well as trade. In her role, Schlapp does not have contact with reporters. But she drew a burst of attention in March after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. There has been a lot of fighting.
